Do vocal processors make you a better singer?

  • The short answer for you Alice is Yes and No.
  • Taking vocal classes or singing classes like what you’re doing now is the right way to go in order to make yourself a better singer.
  • Multi effects processors will not help you become a better singer but will enhance and add different dimensions or color to what you already have.
  • Ok example Burger. Voice is the meat… the patty… processor is the condiments.
  • You have to have good quality meat for the burger to be good and you can even eat that on its own.
  • If you have bad quality meat whatever you throw on it still won’t taste good.
  • Luckily for you and all singers out there I will demonstrate the power of a vocal effects processor.

VOCAL PERFORMER

  • As the name suggests this machine is made mainly for singing live on stage. And I must say it’s a great one.
  • If you’re an ok singer you won’t need much more than this piece of kit.
  • It has all the necessary inputs and outputs you’d need.
  • And you can use all types of mics because you can switch on or off phantom power. I won’t get into technical details.
LET’S GET TO IT
  • Here you go right away you can hear its rich sound.
  • This particular model does great reverbs that you can control… that’s the sound as if you’re in a hall.
  • It does gentle pitch correction or the really hard T-pain or Cher type.
  • It also does doubling so you sound like two people singing, three people or even six people singing.
  • You can also do vocal harmonies and you can set the musical key of your song.
  • It has 30 preset effects and you can create 50 of your own.
  • I’ll run you through some of them.

HARD ROCK 31

  • Has compression and a nice reverb sound

POP

  • Brighter sound… if you wanna be the next lady gaga.
  • I want your love and I want your revenge you and me can write a bad romance.

BALLAD

  • Has a big reverb but a softer sound… if you wanna sing about love

ECHO

  • I’m in a cave….

CATHEDRAL

  • If you wanna sound like you’re part of a church choir… huge hall reverb effect
HIP HIP
  • Which has a bit of distortion as well a tight room feel.
HARMONICA

DOUBLE VOICE

TRIPLE VOICE

ALL KINDS OF VOCAL HARMONY SETTINGS

DISTORTION, RADIO, STROBE, FLANGER

THEN YOU HAVE THE ONES YOU CAN CREATE FROM SCRATH

BON JOVI
  • This one I call Bon Jovi… now I’ll demonstrate with and without harmony… all I have to do is push the pedal and the harmony that I set earlier kicks in
  • I wake up in the morning and I raise my weary head.
US & THEM

CHURCHILL

OPTIMUS
Auto-bots transform… roll out
  • There are a few different makes and models out there but this particular one has a phrase looper built in so you can keep on adding lots of vocal beats on top of each other.
  • Very handy feature for beat boxers… it actually has a vocal percussion setting 41
  • Press phrase loop and your first pedal becomes the recorder and automatically restarts the phrase.

FINAL THOUGHT

  • If you’re still starting out wait till you develop your own singing voice before piling the extras or the flavouring that a machine will add.
  • Develop the meat recipe of the burger before adding toppings.
  • If you’re already a “singer” or “vocalist” and whether you’ve already been performing live or want to start then I would wholeheartedly recommend a vocal effects processor.
  • It certainly adds a whole different dimension and a wealth of vocal options at your disposal.
